Stoptober is the perfect time to think about changing your routine. If you smoke and you’re considering switching to vaping, this guide covers the practical bits in plain English. It’s not medical advice, and it isn’t a promise that vaping will work for everyone.
1. Decide what you want from the switch
Some people want to cut down, some want to stop smoking completely, and some just want to spend less. Be honest with yourself about your goal. Write down how many cigarettes you smoke a day and when you reach for them most, such as with a coffee, after meals or on a break. That tells you how much help you’ll want from your new setup.
2. Pick a simple kit to begin with
You don’t need anything complicated. Most people starting out choose one of two styles:
- Pod kits: small, light and easy to use. You fill or swap a pod and you’re ready. They suit people who want something simple that fits in a pocket.
- Starter kits with a tank: slightly bigger, with a refillable tank and a battery that lasts longer. They give you more choice over flavours and strengths.
If you’re not sure which suits you, ask. It’s what our team is there for.
3. Choose a nicotine strength that fits your smoking
Nicotine strength matters. Too low and you may find yourself reaching for a cigarette. Too high can feel harsh. In the UK, e-liquids are limited to a maximum of 20mg/ml. As a general guide, people who smoke more heavily often start higher, and lighter smokers start lower. Nic salt e-liquids tend to feel smoother at higher strengths, and freebase liquids are often used at lower ones. Our staff can talk through the options with you.

4. Find flavours you actually enjoy
Many people find that sticking with tobacco flavours feels familiar at first, then try fruit, menthol or dessert flavours as they settle in. Try a couple of different bottles or pods until you find one you like. Enjoying it makes it easier to stick with the change.
5. Expect a bit of a learning curve
Vaping feels different to smoking. You may need to take slower, gentler puffs than you would on a cigarette. Some people need a few days to get used to it, and you may need to adjust your strength or kit along the way. Don’t be put off if the first try isn’t perfect.
6. Look after your kit
- Change coils or pods when the flavour fades.
- Keep your device and e-liquid out of reach of children and pets.
- Use the charger that came with your device, and don’t leave it charging unattended.
- Check our Battery & Coil Safety guide for more tips.
7. Get support alongside it
Quitting smoking is easier with support. Speak to your GP, pharmacist or your local NHS stop-smoking service. They can offer free advice and support, and they can talk through the options with you. Stoptober also has free resources from the NHS to help you stay on track.
